i think its crazy how strict discord users are when it comes to the terms of service

like i have never seen a community that had to explicitely state you need to follow the platforms' terms, but every discord server enforces it like their life depends on it

@aei if you moderate a bigger server and discord detects violations they'll reach out to you and you can be taken accountable for it

@void and they still manage to somehow outreddit the redditors in terms of moderation, there's a reason "discord mod" sounds derogatory nowadays

meanwhile youtubers make videos with +5mil views telling you the various ways to block ads on youtube and everywhere else

@aei yes, you just have to indicate the rules again and again, maybe remove the content in question and that's about it. they won't dabble into it much more maybe months later again and you mostly get away with it but.. also saw cases where the server or owning account gets purged partially / entirely

@void i dont believe a platform at this scale, with this many paying users, should still be used with such incomptetent control systems

discord moderation has historically been stupid enough for people to make multiple fingerprinting bots to deal with raids and the like because the base platform doesnt deal with that well enough and either excessively strikes/bans everyone associated with a server

if the platform itself is bad at moderation, dont blame users. i would much rather they hunt and lock down on modded client users and API access like other big platforms do than being this permissive and ridiculous, in favor of leaving egotistical morons to be the police

discord meta @aei full-on agree. currently using it as less as possible and bridging everything over mautrix for the ones that do not have anything else than discord.

discord is so incredibly insecure, have seen so many variants of 'token-grabbers' or automatized bot attacks and alike. the discord api is so incredibly exploitable even though they do have a somewhat decent bot detection that got bypassed how many times already? and considering all the money for nitro or boosts that flows into them.. it's insane. not to mention or to start with all the messages getting scanned or the age verification agency... bleh
